You can test out to see if you site is crawling properly along with many other tasks. You also need to setup an account with Bing Webmaster Tools

Depending on your niche market that you are in and the type of content that your website has on it will determine where to begin. I suggest that you find high ranking directories that are related to your market and get listed in those. You can do a simple search through Google (or other search engine) to find these directories. Some of these directories cost and some of them are free, but it is worth the investment to get listed. By getting listed in the directory you are getting a backlink that is from a high ranking site. This will help you in your Search Engine Optimization plan over the long term. Be careful that you don’t put your site on too many directories or on ones that are considered spammy. Utilize your search engine to find out the best directories. When considering this if you are a business you want to ensure that you listed in Yelp, Google Places, and other niche specific directories. Another aspect of offsite optimization includes obtaining backlinks. This can prove to be a very tricky process. When considering places to obtain backlinks you need to ensure that the site is relevant to your content, the placement of the backlink, the anchor text (the words that the link are attached to), authority of the site (Page Rank), the number of out going links the site already has, and various other factors. With Google + you will not be able to use keywords so you need to ensure that your title is keyword rich. (I will be doing my next article on keyword research.) Once you have bookmarked the sites you will see that you will get traffic from doing this. This will prove to be just as powerful as organic search traffic. Most of the traffic you get form the social bookmarking sites will come from people who are searching for specific content on your site (This is why keywords and titles are very important!).

The last method is article marketing. Article marketing is a very tedious task, but will help you get one way backlinks from high ranking sites. Before you start on article marketing it is important that you understand keywords and the proper placement. You also have to ensure that you are placing your articles on sites that have authority and that you do not put too many articles out there at a time.

Search engine optimization is a two fold task of optimizing a website for search engines. SEO can be broke down into two categories. The first category is on site search engine optimization and the second is offsite SEO. Both of these are equally important, but when starting you should focus with onsite optimization.

Search engines are used daily to find information, products, and services. It doesn’t matter what you are offering on your website it is important that your site is optimized so that the search engines can crawl your site and then index the information in the search engines. The most popularly used search engine is Google. To start out you should put most of your focus on optimizing your website for Google. Other search engines include Yahoo!, Bing, Ask, and various others. Bing and Yahoo! have recently combined forces and Bing is the main catalyst in ranking for either of the search engines.

3 Key Elements of Onsite Search Engine Optimization

The first element that is key in how to do SEO for your website for proper SEO is meta data. Meta data is simply the use of meta title, meta description, and meta keywords. The meta title is the Title of your page. These elements are contained within the header of your web page. The meta title should contain a title that is 60 characters or less that is descriptive and relevant to the content on the page. The title should utilize appropriate keywords to help you to rank higher in search engine results. The meta description is more for information, but is just as important. The description should tell the reader what they should expect to find on the page. It is a good practice to put a call to action that will entice the reader to click on and also to read the content on your web page. The last is the meta keywords. The meta keywords will tell Google and other search engines what keywords (and content) will be found on your web page. It is important that you take the proper time to do keyword research before creating a your web page. (More information will be talked about later on keyword research.)

The second element of onsite search engine optimization is a site map. Creating a site map is essential for search engine optimization. A sitemap is a file that tells the search engines what content is on your website. The file will be found in the main folder of your website and is used by the search engine to crawl your website. It tells the location and also the type of content on your site.
